| 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee auto tranny trouble seems electronic? My jeep suddenly wont stay in O.D (the O.D light on the dash flickers on/off) and from a stop wants to start off in second gear. | I believe your 97 has the same OD shifting solenoids as our 01. Ours wasnt shifting well, and OD would slip in and out. Replacement requires draining the tranny fluid and removing/replacing the solenoids. A reputable shop can take care of this for you and also check to see if there are other/different problems. | 96 lumina tranny trouble again? For everyone who has helped me out by answering my questions I want to truly thank you. You all have been a TREMENDOUS help. I found out that indeed the guy that put my engine in and tranny back inplace DID over fill my fluid and it was leaking from the dipstick (i guess) I drained fluid and made sure my pan was tight and it is now fixed and there are no more leaks. YEAH!!!! :) However, it did not fix my shifting problem. I dont know what else to do. I dont know how to tell if its vacuum or what. I was told the vacuum modulator might be bad, but then I found it there was a cut in the hose, fixed that but still no change in shifting. It shifts out of gears at 4500rpms and while driving it sounds like a darn jet. i know it isnt supposed to sound like that. Only in first it sounds normal. after it reaches 4500 rpms and goes into second it stays reved up. what else could it be and how to fix it. |
| <<<<< 9 years auto tech repair. If your transmission is shifting into all speeds. 1,2,3 and, overdrive then the transmission is still functioning. The very first thing you should do is disconnect the battery cables. Get into the car and hold the brake pedal down for 30 seconds to drain power from computer. Wait a good 5 minutes and reconnect the battery. Start the engine and let idle for 15 minutes. This should give the computer enough time to adjust. Now test drive the vehicle. If you still have the problem check for unplugged wiring connections going to the transmission and engine. Make sure the vacuum connection and solenoid are plugged in. | 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tranny Trouble? Tranny shifts fine when first use of the day, but as the day goes on it wont shift out of 2cnd and wont go into reverse with out waiting about ten min. then it will usually work fine. When it dont shift out of 2cnd you have to pullover and put it into reverse and wait for it to go into reverse then it will shift fine. I have replaced speed sensor and helped for a couple days then back to not shifting. |

| How can I check the fault code on a 1998 dodge caravan without using an obd2? Tranny trouble? I used to check my 97 honda accord ex's fault codes with a paper clip, can I do the same with a 98 dodge caravan? The caravan's automatic transmission is problematic, as I push the gas pedal to accelerate from a stoped position it takes a second or two for the tranny to actualy grip.. ,, its not slipping,, it has full power once gripped but trouble holding that grip ... I was told that the abs could be the culprit and to remove the abs fuse which i havn't tried yet since i must jump start the van again... |
| If I recall right you can still use the ignition to read the mil codes via the engine light on that year of Dodge by placing the ignition into run then to ACC then back to the run , then back to the ACC then back to the run and back to the ACC then leave it in the run position.If you see the engine light flash once then pause then flash twice in a row that is code 12=battery has been disconnected recently, once you see code 55 = end of stored codes or end of cycle. | No. A transmission will overheat only for 2 possible reasons, a clutch pack is slipping, this will result in loss of a gear or gears. The second reason is simple abuse, excessive brake torquing or off road racing. A clutch pack which will not disengage ( welded ) will result in a transmission which will bind up, usually when it shifts into second gear or reverse. |
